FAQ

  • How many people can go on the Flying Fox ?

The Flying Fox can hold one, two and even three people at a time! So choose to Fly solo, or bring along a friend or two to experience the thrill of flight together!

  • How fast will I be travelling?

The maximum speed ever clocked on our Flying Fox has been 160kph (100mph)! Most of our rides reach a minimum of 130kph, so try and keep yourself as stream-lined as possible, and see if you can break the speed record!

  • How safe is it? Should I be worried?

It's very safe of course! You will first be instructed to put on a safety harness, and then a custom built Flying Fox harness, before being attached to the rider block via 7 separate attachment points. We have a perfect safety record and staff that have been trained extensively and know exactly how to take care of you!

  • How do I get to the Flying Fox platform?

After crossing the Rangitikei river at a height of 80m (by walking over the Mokai Road bridge), there is a peaceful walk through some of New Zealand's most precious native reserve. It is a tough walk (about 15 minutes), but you are rewarded with an amazing view once you get to the top! (Not to mention the added bonus of the Flying Fox ride itself!)

  • Where do I leave my personal items? What should I bring with me?

You can choose to leave your stuff with the staff at the registration desk, or you can take them with you and leave them on a bench at the Flying Fox platform, and pick them up again after your ride! If you leave your items at registration, don't forget to take your camera to prove how high up you walked!

  • How does it work?

The Flying Fox is 175m above the river bed - the perfect height for a gravity-fed ride into the canyon! After being harnessed into our custom built harnesses, and then attached to the Fox block itself, the release lever is pulled and gravity does it's thing! You will fly down into the canyon, and under the bridge, before heading up towards the cliff face on the other side. You will then gradually slow down while rolling backwards and forwards along the cable - take in the spectacular scenery before we winch you back to the top again to get off!

  • How do I get back from the Flying Fox?

Once you have rolled back and forth along the cable a couple of times (to let you take in the wonder of the Rangitikei canyon), we bring you back to the take-off platform using a specially designed retrieval system. You are then able to take a relaxed stroll back through the native reserve to the cafe before watching yourself on the big screen!

  • Are there any restrictions?

Yes - to fly at Gravity Canyon you must be at least 10 years old and weigh a minimum of 35 kg. If you are under 16 years you also require parental consent. Our maximum individual weight is 150kg, and the maximum combined weight (for either a tandem or triple flight) is 300kg.

There are some medical conditions that may stop you from completing our Flying Fox. If you are concerned, please give us a call, or consult your doctor.

  • How long has the Flying Fox been operating?

The Flying Fox has been open since February 2004, and has been our most popular activity ever since! So come along and experience New Zealand's most extreme Flying Fox!

  • What if I decide not to Fly?

If you have purchased your Flying Fox ticket and decide not to fly, it is unfortunately not refundable nor transferable.

Our experienced flight crew have seen and heard it all, and are very good at persuading people into doing things they don't think they can! Don't be afraid to ask for help if you think you need it!

  • How much does it cost?

The cost of a flying fox ride is NZD $155 per person. Please go to our Book Now or Shop page for details of product pricing.
